Objective of the traineeship:

The goal of the traineeship is twofold:

  • You will prepare data for econometric and statistical analyses and assist the (senior) economists of the Economics Department (SG/ECON) to process the results from these analyses, helping them to provide economic rationale and to draw policy conclusions.
  • You will benefit from the opportunity to work in an international financial institution, thereby gaining valuable work experience, insights into economic, financial and policy analysis, establishing professional contacts and gaining knowledge of the functioning of the EIB.

Responsibilities:


Under the supervision of a (senior) economist of the Economics Department, you will carry out work related to various projects, including the development and management of macroeconomic, microeconomic and financial databases and the related products.

The data are used for econometric and statistical analysis and serve as an input to various tools and models and to economic, financial and policy analyses prepared by the (senior) economists in SG/ECON.

Specifically, their use includes internal models for sovereign risk rating and bank industry risk ratings, the monitoring tool for sovereign risk, macroeconomic scenarios, country reports, economic briefings, the EIB Finance in Africa Survey and the CESEE bank lending survey.


Your main tasks will be:

  • Extract, develop, prepare and manage large datasets for econometric and statistical analysis.
  • Prepare basic descriptive statistics, charts, tables and short reports based on data analysis.
  • Cooperate with (senior) economists in developing econometric and statistical models for data analysis as well as in database management and programming.
  • Cooperate and assist (senior) economists in exploring and interpreting the results from the econometric and statistical analysis, providing economic rationale and drawing policy conclusions.
  • Draft short literature reviews on topics that are relevant to the projects of the Economics Department.

Academic qualifications and professional skills:

  • Ability to work with statistical software such as Stata, R, Python, MATLAB and financial/economic data services; Excel VBA and SQL programming skills as well as general database knowledge would be a major asset.
  • Good knowledge of economic theory, corporate finance or advanced statistical methods for the econometric analysis of macroeconomic, microeconomic or financial data.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and/or French with a good command of the other.
