**The role**
Hiscox is seeking a Chief Risk Officer (CRO) who will have leadership responsibility for the combined Risk and Compliance function of the European Business Unit. They will report into the Group Chief Risk Officer and will sit as a member of the Group Risk & Compliance Leadership Team. They will have a dotted line into the Hiscox Europe CEO and will sit as a member of the European Management Team (EMT). Working collaboratively with the central Group Risk & Compliance team, they will have frequent exposure to key business unit and Group stakeholders, including Non-Executive Directors and senior management. They will also hold a key relationship with the Luxembourg Commissariat aux Assurances.
The role is part of a new Hiscox wide Target Operating Model (TOM) for the Risk and Compliance function. The TOM has two primary functional areas reporting into the Group Chief Risk Officer:
- Group Risk & Compliance teams to set group-wide standards and frameworks for risk and compliance, establish risk appetite guidelines, monitor and adapt to the global regulatory landscape, manage regulator relationships at a Group level, manage Group-wide enterprise risk, and be the home of certain specialist risk and compliance expertise.
- Business Unit Risk & Compliance teams to provide expertise and independent challenge to the BU first line teams in matters such as risk and control assessments, ORSA reporting, operational risk events, regulatory advice and training, and referrals relating to customer due diligence, whilst ensuring the standards and best practices from our Group Risk & Compliance team are met.
Beyond specific responsibilities across Risk and Compliance for the European business, Hiscox is first and foremost looking for someone who can be a member of the European executive team (EMT), to think, act and engage as a business leader, contributing to the wider strategic goals of the business. As such, it is expected they will be able to contribute beyond their own functional area of expertise, balancing risk and reward, supporting the business in quantifying possible outcomes which is especially important in our fast growing business unit.
For risk and compliance, they will build on foundational work to ensure Hiscox Europe and Hiscox Société Anonyme (HSA, the insurance legal entity) can identify, assess, monitor, report and mitigate significant competitive, regulatory, financial, operational, and reputational threats to the company’s capital while enabling opportunities for growth. They will act as a key business partner to the EMT, accelerating the business’s risk views, shaping its risk approach and proactively developing and improving its risk culture. In this, they will communicate effectively with key stakeholders to provide real time second line strategic advice and an alternate lens, acting as a critical advisor of the business.
The EU CRO will be responsible for leading all aspects of risk management including performance of HSA’s Own Risk & Self-Assessment (ORSA) and embedding a risk culture across the European business unit, managing a small but expert team of risk and regulatory compliance professionals. They will have oversight of the implementation of Hiscox’s Risk Management Framework which includes risk appetites, emerging risks, incident capture, analysis, and Enterprise Risk Management reporting within a three-lines of defence model. In addition, they will oversee various economic capital model validation activities, operational risk events, regulatory advice and training, referrals relating to customer due diligence, aggregate ORSA Stress & Scenario Testing and proposing risk limits for Board approval where appropriate for the business, leaning on a centralised team of risk actuarial experts to support this undertaking.
