EschsurAlzette, Luxembourg Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) Temps plein
Internship contract | Belvaux | 6 Months Are you passionate about research? So are we Come and join us The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies. The Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) group supports industry, policy and society by developing science-based sustainability methodologies and computational tools for life cycle sustainability assessment. Building on its strong expertise in environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the group has expanded its scope to include social and economic dimensions alongside the enhanced simulation of industrial processes, providing a holistic view of sustainability performance. Do you want to know more about LIST? Check our website: https://www.list.lu/ How will you contribute? The REPower EU Strategy (2022) aims at: i) producing 10 million tonnes and importing 10 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030; ii) covering around 10% of the EU’s energy needs with renewable hydrogen by 2050, decarbonising energy and the transport sector. Biohydrogen is one of the renewable hydrogens produced from biomass (non-edible feedstocks) and organic waste using bacteria, algae, or microalgae, which can subsequently be converted into green energy. Renewable green hydrogen production offers dual-use Earth/space applications boosting the implementation of the circular economy, net-zero emissions and zero waste initiatives not only on Earth but also in space (Moon, Mars and beyond). You will mainly be in charge of: 1. Literature review of comparative LCA studies on technologies and methods for biohydrogen production and energy production from hydrogen, covering the complete biomass-to hydrogen-to-energy value chain. 2. LCA of biological green hydrogen on Earth (production, compression, transport, storage, energy production), considering different biological methods for green hydrogen production from biomass (with a focus on dark fermentation and photo-fermentation). The resulting master thesis will include: 1. Literature review of comparative LCA studies on technologies and methods for biohydrogen production and energy production from hydrogen. 2. LCA assessment report. 3. Conclusions on the comparative performance of the assessed technologies and methods for biohydrogen production and energy production from hydrogen, considering the environmental impacts, the yield and the economic viability. 4. Perspectives on the future potential in terms of yield and the economic viability if those technologies are developed further and scaled up, as well as on their dual use for Earth/space applications.   Is
