Background
At the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), our Health Data Service (HDS) team builds the tools and services that help researchers make better use of health data. We work closely with the Luxembourg Research Clinic (LRC), hospitals, clinical teams and research partners to turn real needs into solutions that people can use.
Do you enjoy coding, trying new AI technologies and turning ideas into working applications? We are looking for an AI Solutions Engineer who likes solving real problems, working with people and bringing useful AI solutions into everyday research workflows.
Key Accountabilities
• Meet researchers, LRC colleagues and hospital clinical, data and IT teams to understand what they need and where AI could genuinely help.
• Design and build AI-powered applications, assistants, search tools and workflow automations that fit into existing systems.
• Work hands-on with large language models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), prompts, context, tool integration and secure APIs.
• Connect your solutions to authorised research and hospital data sources, together with data engineers and software teams.
• Test solutions with users, improve their reliability, explain their limitations and help deploy and maintain them in approved environments.
• Share what you learn with the team and help us choose technologies because they are useful, not simply because they are new. Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications Qualifications
• A Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, software engineering, medical informatics or a related field, and around five years of relevant professional experience.
• Strong software development skills, ideally in Python, and experience building and maintaining applications or APIs.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs or AI features integrated into real applications; familiarity with RAG, embeddings or semantic search.
• A good grounding in testing, version control, CI/CD, documentation and secure development.
• An open, practical approach: you enjoy talking to users, working across teams and improving solutions based on feedback.
• Fluent spoken and written English; French or German is a plus. Nice To Have You do not need to tick every box. Experience in any of these areas would be a plus:
• Experience with Docker, LLMOps/MLOps, monitoring or on-premises AI deployment.
• Knowledge of hospital information systems (HIS), clinical workflows or hospital data integration.
• Familiarity with HL7 FHIR, OMOP, terminology services, regulated health data or clinical research.
• Experience with metadata catalogues, data integration tools or knowledge management systems. Working Together You will be part of HDS, working side by side with AI Data Engineers, developers, architects and research teams. You will have opportunities to collaborate directly with the LRC and hospital partners, from the first discussion to real-world delivery. This is an engineering role focused on useful, secure, maintainable solutions, not a scientific data analysis position. Responsible Use of Health Data You will follow LIH procedures for information security, confidentiality, data protection and responsible AI. Health data must be used only in authorised environments and with appropriate access, documentation and human oversight. The role may involve meetings and occasional on-site work with hospital and other partners. Gender Equality The LIH is an equal opportunities employer, fully committed to removing discriminatory barriers — not only those related to gender — in the recruitment and career progression of our staff. The LIH is attentive to gender representation among its leadership staff and aims to eliminate obstacles to recruitment and promotion of female leaders and their career development. In Short
