RESPONSIBILITIES Molecular Biology & Genetic Engineering
• Perform a range of molecular biology techniques — including cloning, (q)PCR and vector preparation — under the guidance of senior scientists.
• Support CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing experiments (knockout, knock-in, gene silencing/overexpression) in stem cells and neural models.
• Prepare DNA/RNA samples for sequencing and help analyse the results.
• Extract biological material from samples for multi-OMICS analyses.
• Perform cell transfection and set up biochemical assays (e.g. enzymatic assays). Cell & Tissue Culture — Neurodegeneration & Stem-Cell Models
• Culture and differentiate mammalian cells, stem cells (including iPSCs) and organoids in 2D and 3D systems.
• Establish and maintain patient-derived and iPSC-derived neural models — including neurons, brain organoids and Parkinson's-disease models — for disease modelling and phenotyping.
• Maintain mammalian cell banks and perform routine passaging and mycoplasma testing.
• Manage and maintain cell culture facilities to ensure high standards of operation. Microscopy & Imaging
• Conduct immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent staining of samples.
• Assist with microscopy and image analysis for cellular and molecular studies. Automation & Technology Integration
• Work confidently with lab technology, including automation and advanced data generation systems.
• Assist in the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automated lab workflows; high-throughput and robotics experience is a strong positive. Laboratory Organization & Maintenance
• Prepare and maintain chemical solutions, growth media, and bacterial glycerol stocks; maintain laboratory equipment.
• Ensure proper waste disposal, glassware cleaning, and consumables refilling; order, stock, and inventory laboratory supplies. Data Analysis & Scientific Contributions
• Perform statistical analysis on experimental data and present findings; maintain detailed lab notebooks.
• Support scientists in methodology development, manuscript preparation, and internal scientific meetings. REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Stem-Cell Biology or a related field.
• 2 years+ of laboratory experience — including internships, thesis or academic research projects.
• Foundational hands-on skills in molecular biology and cell culture, with a strong interest in neurodegeneration and stem-cell models.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
• Ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative team.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, and a passion for innovation.
• Legal right to work in Malta / the EU (or eligibility to obtain a Maltese work permit). PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH
• Hands-on experience with stem cells / iPSCs and neural or organoid disease models (e.g. from thesis or internship projects).
• Exposure to genetic engineering and CRISPR-Cas9 techniques.
• Past experience in automation or high-throughput testing is a strong plus.
