The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

**Responsibilities**:
**How will you contribute?**:
As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the **Environmental Research and Innovation** (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today such as adaptation to climate change, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.

To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:
(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation;
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of:

- Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources).
- Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities.

You will join your Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit, which develops knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and risks of human driven systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policymaking.

You will more specifically join the Environmental Health (EH) research group. The activities conducted within the EH group develop complex 3D - _in vitro_ models for toxicological testing as a major research activity. Such models undergo in house pre-validation under laboratory conditions and are applied to a wide range of contaminants from chemicals to nanomaterials. These models are then applied within nationally and internationally funded research projects and in collaborative research projects with industry.

Your c**ontributions to EH projects**:

- Further develop 3D in vitro model and perform 3D in vitro experiments;
- Propose and initiate improvements for the visualization aspects;
- Valorise the developed models in the form of filed patents and high IF publications

Must Have Requirements
You hold a PhD in biology, cell biology or a related field

You have proved experience with advanced cell-culture and are able to use the relevant equipment present within the ERIN Department: e.g. cell culture, confocal microscopy, the various exposure systems for cell exposure at the Air-Liquid-Interface, ELISA, DNA/RNA extraction and real-time PCR.**
You also have relevant expertise in:

- Cell biology; knowledge in advanced multicell culture will be an asset;
- Analysis of chemical/particle distribution in cells for in vitro toxicity studies;
- Good communication skills;
- Being well organized and able to keep track on multiple tasks performed at different partners;
- Publication in relevant journals;

You have a good command in English.

Nice To Have Requirements
Knowledge of Luxembourgish, French and/or German is an asset
