- Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
- The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
**How will you contribute?**:
The ultimate goal of the postdoc’s efforts will be to better understand the processing-structure-property relationships by taking into account the effects of variations in cellulosic feedstock, processing and (post-)modification conditions and to develop new (bio)composite materials that take advantage of the unique properties of the cellulosic (nano)materials produced in this effort, with the goal of achieving a technology readiness level (TRL) of 4 or higher.
The postdoc will undertake active and experimental research in the processing of cellulosic (nano)materials from different source materials via mechanical breakdown processes and explore processing aids in the form of enzymatic and/or chemical treatments. Processed (nano)materials will be characterized using a range of advanced characterization techniques including microscopy (AFM, SEM, TEM), particle size analysis and specific surface are analysis. Additionally, the postdoc will be expected to incorporate the resulting cellulosic (nano)materials into various polymer matrix materials and carry out thermal, mechanical and rheological characterization of both the resultant (nano)composites and their individual components.
The postdoc will participate in regular meetings, effectively communicate findings in a professional fashion in both oral and written form, and take a leading role in the protection and dissemination of the work, while interacting constructively and in a positive manner with a diverse group of colleagues and contributing to the success of the group, unit and institution. An active contribution to shape the direction of the proposed research is strongly encouraged.

You hold a PhD in materials science, materials processing or a related field, with a strong motivation towards experimental research in a diverse, collaborative and team-oriented environment. You are familiar with processing of cellulosic materials and composites are and able to characterize those materials by microscopy, and study their thermal, mechanical and processing characteristics.**WE OFFER**
