Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the Materials Research and Technology (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers. The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization, and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
**Responsibilities**:
**How will you contribute?**:
The Process Modelling, Automation, and Robotisation (PROMAR) group headed by Dr. Matthias Rupp performs state-of-the-art research in machine learning for physics, chemistry, and materials science. For this, they combine learning and optimization algorithms with data from experiments and simulations. The group is part of the Scientific Instrumentation and Process Technology (SIPT) unit of MRT.
The PROMAR group is setting up a line of research focusing on machine-learning models for plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD). Its focus will be on atomistic simulations with machine-learning potentials and on machine learning-assisted accelerated materials development. Goals include the analysis and modulation of plasma-enhanced deposition processes for insights into such processes and the optimization of experiments based on them.
- design and develop the complete ion optics for an advanced time-of-flight mass spectrometer.
- contribute to MEMS process development for ion optical components.
- contribute to the prototyping of the instruments/devices.
- participate in testing the mass spectrometer in the laboratory and relevant space engineering environments
- acquire highly valued skills in charged particle optics simulation and design, mass spectrometry instrumentation, scientific instrument development, MEMS fabrication, and space engineering testing and qualification.
- contribute to securing novel intellectual property originating from the project, as well as disseminate the results in international conferences and write scientific papers.
Must Have Requirements
**Education**
- Ph.D. in Physics, Materials science, Computer Science, or related field
**Experience and skills**
- Computational materials science (ab initio calculations, molecular dynamics simulations)
- Machine learning (kernel models, neural networks, machine-learning potentials)
- Programming (Python, C/C++)
- Ability to work in a team
- Fluent in English (both written and oral)
