- The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.
- You will join the recently established Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit and will in particular be involved in its hardwareintheloop (HIL) simulation laboratory. The ICES research unit aims to develop groundbreaking marketoriented solutions in the ways in which energy is generated, distributed and consumed, meeting the challenge of cutting greenhousegas emissions, ensuring energy security, planning feasible business models and socially outreach advances.
- Essential to the ICES unit is the smart grid vision, namely, an electricity network in which information flows freely between consumers and suppliers, and demand adapts in realtime in response to the continuously changing supply from intermittent renewable sources. The ICES unit however extends this vision toward a wider energy portfolio, integrating other energy infrastructures together to electricity, and providing further abstraction and intelligence levels in the conception of solutions for both planning and operating the energy systems of the future.
- Moreover, in addition to generate impacting solutions addressing society and market needs, this research unit will conduct fundamental research aiming groundbreaking disclosers to remove barriers and introduce revolutionary concepts for planning, developing and operating the Intelligent Clean Energy Systems of the future.
Responsibilities:
How will you contribute?:
As a researcher you will participate in smart grid automation projects with intensive use of RT-HIL and networked digital devices, which might include designing control solutions for REN, BESS, FACTS, HVDC systems, EV charging, among others, making and intensive use of communications.
- Developing operation and control solutions for active grids based on distributed generation and control.
- Modelling smart grids and distributed assets, and conducting static and dynamic analyses.
- Validating developments in a RT-HIL, integrating networked controllers and power converters.
- Disseminating results through publications, conferences and social media.
- Contribute to the creation of intellectual property rights (patents, licences, etc.).
- Participating in project proposals preparation
Must-have requirements:
You hold a PhD degree in the field of operation and control of smart grids with distributed generation.
You have a proved first experience (1-2 years) in:
- RT-HIL simulation and control of smart grids and renewable energy systems (preferably using OPAL-RT interacting with distributed controllers).
- Standard communication technologies and protocols, such as IEC61850, IEC , DNP3, ICCP,.
- Modelling and controlling smart grids, including electrical networks, REN systems, FACTS, microgrids, power plants, controllers, etc.
- Power systems analysis tools (preferably with DIgSILENT and PSS/E).
- Experience with controllers for gridconnected power converters will be highly appreciated.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills (oral, written, presentation), including vs technical, management/executive and business audiences.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team across the ICES RDI unit.
- Good knowledge of programming languages, such as C#, Python,.Net, Java, etc
Nice-to-have requirements:
- The knowledge in at least one of the official languages of Luxembourg (French, German or Luxembourgish) is an asset.
