  • The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.
  • The department relies on two cuttingedge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a onestopshop for the complete development of biobased products and processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

How will you contribute?:

  • You will be a part of the ERIN's Environmental and Industrial Biotechnologies (BIOTECH) unit.

This RDI unit has developed expertise in:

  • Metabolic engineering and integrative biology aiming the production of biomolecules of industrial interest produced by plants or microorganisms,
  • Developing new remediation technologies and processes for environmental pollution control
  • Developing new microbial risk assessment and management tools including wastewaterbased epidemiological tools


The BIOTECH unit carries out impact-driven research geared to the development of bio-based products and processes of industrial interest, new biorefinery concepts for more efficient and sustainable processes, and new technologies for the detection and treatment of environmental pollution.


This post-doctoral researcher position is part of the APTAVIR project "Aptasensors as an emerging and convenient tool to improve the multiplex detection of foodborne viral", funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund.


  • The objective of the APTAVIR project is to develop an innovative diagnostic tool based on DNA aptamers to monitor the main foodborne viruses in environmental, water, food or clinical samples. The longterm objective is to bring to market a new generation of diagnostic kits, which will allow efficient, sensitive, rapid and inexpensive detection of viruses of interest. This project is included in a portfolio of projects aimed at the development, demonstration, and marketing of innovative biosensors.
  • More particularly, you will be in charge of:
  • Designing, customising and optimising new aptamers for a series of families of foodborne viruses
  • Establishment and validation of robust protocols yielding a reliable method of producing and selecting aptamers (SELEX) that bind to novel viral targets
  • Implement and perform NGS sequencing
  • Work in collaboration with a bioinformatician to develop bioinformatics pipelines, including sequence homology, round to round evolution, secondary structure prediction and motif discovery
  • Design and perform laboratory experiments to understand the interaction between aptamers and viral particles by binding studies using various technologies in order to determine the functional part of the aptamers and the recognition site on the viral particle
  • Incorporate the developed aptamers in detection platforms (lateral flow assay and a fluorescent aptasensor)
  • Validate the usefulness of developed aptamers in complex clinical or environmental samples

MUST HAVE

REQUIREMENTS

  • You hold a PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, or a related field
  • You also have:
  • A wellestablished experience and profound knowledge of in vitro selection of aptamers
  • A proven expertise in classical molecular biology tools (DNA preparation, purification, PCR, Cloning, NGS ),
  • An expertise in affinity binding studies (ELISA testing, Surface Plasmon Resonance and other binding assays)
  • A high motivation by new challenges
  • A strong scientific curiosity, problemsolving skills and research integrity
  • An ability to independently work on the research project and as a member of a collaborative team
  • An ability to communicate effectively, in both written and oral formats
  • A good command of scientific and office informatics tools
You have a great command in English. Knowledge of French will be considered as an asset.

  • NGS data analysis as well as expertise in cell culture and virus production will be considered as an asset.
