DESCRIPTION
The team automates the manual classification process through technical solutions that rely heavily on machine learning models. We partner closely with business, operations and tech teams worldwide to deliver complex, ambitious roadmaps with the customer's goal in mind. We leverage off the sciences of data, information processing, machine learning, and generative AI to improve user experience, automation, service resilience, and operational efficiency. Our work expands AI-driven capabilities of our Retail businesses.
We are seeking a successful Applied Science Manager to lead our efforts in automating the classification of our entire worldwide selection within regulatory classes. The Applied Science Manager will work with stakeholders from multiple business units to gather requirements and will own our BIE, TPM, Applied Science and Research Science functions to research, develop and deploy the next generation of classification models.
You will work closely with the business and technical teams to analyze many non-standard and unique business problems and use creative problem solving to deliver results.
You Independently works on problems that are not well defined or structured. Identifies and frames new research challenges associated with broad problem areas.
As an Applied Science Manager, you will lead and grow a high-performing team of data, applied and research scientists, technical program managers, software development engineers and business intelligence engineers. You will partner with operations, store, compliance, science and engineering leadership to identify opportunities to drive efficiency improvement across Worldwide Operations Risk Compliance.
As a science leader, you will not only develop and deploy mathematical solutions, but also influence strategy and outcomes across multiple partner science teams within catalog classification teams. You will identify new areas of investment and research and work to align roadmaps to deliver on these opportunities. This role is inherently cross-functional and requires an ability to communicate, influence and earn the trust of science, technical, operations and business leadership.
Key job responsibilities
Lead a scientific and technical organization of SDEs, Scientists, BIEs, Technical Program Managers
Deliver the research, development and deployment of ML models into production system to automatically classify Amazon's selection within the different regulatory classes.
Research and publish new state-of-the-art solutions to improve the efficiency of our manual classification and compliance processes.
Develop the strategic (3Y) and tactical (1Y) scientific roadmap of the Operations Risk and Compliance organization.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience
Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics
Experience directly managing scientists or machine learning engineers
Ability to translate informal customer requirements into problem definitions, dealing with ambiguity and competing objectives.
LLMs and foundation models experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
Project management experience working on cross-functional projects
