Are you looking for your next opportunity?

Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Continental Europe Chief Risk Officer (CE CRO) to support its Sompo International Insurance Europe (SIIE) legal entity and growing Continental Europe business.

Sompo's ambition in Europe is to become a leading Commercial P&C insurer in the Continental Europe insurance marketplace, providing first class underwriting and claims expertise through a service focused, cost-effective operating model.  The CE CRO will play a pivotal role in supporting the region's growth ambitions, helping shape and challenge business strategy while ensuring robust risk governance.  This is a blended role as the Risk Management Key Function Holder for the Luxemburg based regulated entity of SIIE whilst also responsible for risk management for the wider Continental Europe region.

The role reports to the Sompo International CRO and the SIIE CEO, acting as the primary risk advisor to the SIIE executive team and board, and Continental Europe regional management.  As the business matures, the successful candidate is expected to influence strategy, business and underwriting decisions through authoritative, data-informed insights.  The role ensures material risks are identified, assessed, monitored, and reported in line with regulatory expectations and business strategy.

Location: This role is primarily based in our Luxemburg office whilst also supporting our wider regional European business.

Our business, your impact, our opportunity:

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead, influence and collaborate with colleagues across the European business to achieve long term ambitions and annual goals while adhering with risk appetites and controls.
  • Provide independent, objective oversight and challenge across all risk types, with emphasis on underwriting and portfolio risk.
  • Maintain and enhance the SIIE and Continental Europe risk management frameworks, aligned with Sompo Group standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver high-quality risk reporting to boards, committees, and regulators, including ORSA, risk appetite, and emerging risk assessments.
  • Engage confidently and constructively with business leaders and underwriters to challenge assumptions and support risk-informed decisions.
  • Contribute to a strong risk culture through training, communication, and example.
  • Collaborate with global risk teams (e.g. exposure management, capital modelling, operational risk) to meet European business specific needs and support group-wide initiatives.
  • Represent the SIIE risk function in regulatory interactions and ensure compliance with risk function responsibilities.

What you'll bring:

  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, including board members, executive leadership, and regulators with confidence, credibility, and authoritative communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to challenge constructively and build trust across functions.
  • Strategic thinker who connects risk themes across the business and translates complexity into action.
  • A natural curiosity to explore risks, challenge assumptions, and develop solutions collaboratively.
  • Experience in risk management within the commercial P&C insurance or reinsurance sector.
  • Understanding of underwriting practices and regulatory frameworks (e.g. Solvency II, CAA).
