OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorld’s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and further on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life-threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond._
- OffWorld Europe SARL, based in Luxembourg, is an affiliate of OffWorld, Inc. (OffWorld US), with its headquarters in Altadena, California. Combined with its South Africa & Australiia operations, OffWorld currently has over 85 team members and over 6,000 sqm of engineering facilities. OffWorld Europe will focus on developing and deploying modules for extraction and storage of resources on the Moon. _
The head of OffWorld Europe’s Research and Development effort will lead the R&D of a lunar volatile extraction and processing module to demonstrate the in-situ production of hydrogen and oxygen from lunar polar ices. It is anticipated that this individual will be a scientist or engineer with experience in leading R&D teams. This individual will identify critical strategic knowledge gaps that will affect the design of the processing module, identify the initial processing module demonstration requirements, conduct laboratory scale experiments to down select specific extraction and separation technologies., and assist in the design of the processing module. Knowledge of the lunar environment and experience in developing ISRU experiments is required. Experience in water electrolysis is a plus.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Rapidly develop and validate engineering solutions to meet ISRU customer requirements
- Focus on development of modules for extraction and storage of oxygen and hydrogen from volatiles and water deposits at the lunar surface.
- Collaboratively synthesize top level system design concepts and architectures, perform trade studies, and optimize the designs to meet goals and requirements within budget.
- Trade-off analysis of possible processes for extraction and storage of oxygen and hydrogen from volatiles and water deposits at the lunar surface.
- Resolve Strategic Knowledge Gaps for operating in the lunar environment.
- Design through Preliminary Design Review, lunar ground truth experiments applicable to experiment module development for a lunar ground truth payload.
- Develop lunar ground truth payloads that will accommodate the lunar experiment module, including the design, build, operations, and data analysis of the payload.
- Support project management and team in ensuring systems engineering tasks are completed in a timely manner.
- Develop and document detailed test plans and procedures based on engineering specifications and requirements verification and validation compliance matrices.
- Summarize and mitigate risks
- Hire and lead a team of 4 engineers within the first year
To hit the ground running, you need:
- MSc or PhD in Systems, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
- 15+ years of current technical hands-on experience in:
- Developing and executing space based ISRU projects
- Technical writing and communication skills
- Hands-on experience with testing with a strong safety record
- A proven track record of working successfully in multiple disciplines
- Experience leading teams
- Flexible mindset
- System mindset and aptitude
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
- Experience with, Confluence, Jira, Tableau, SQL
