- The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.
- You will join the Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of ERIN. SUSTAIN develops knowledge, transferable (software) technologies, practical methods and outreach activities for the simulation and comprehensive sustainability assessment of societal systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable eco-innovation, through products and technologies, as well as support sustainability-oriented policy implementation and behavioural change to promote decarbonisation transitions.
- Within the SUSTAIN Unit, you will be incorporated in the Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (LCSA) research group. The group consists of ca. 25 researchers developing sustainability metrics and indicators, to assess the environmental and social impacts of products, technologies, territories and policies, for both industrial organisations and policy makers.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
**How will you contribute?**:
You will contribute to three European research projects, mainly in the development of LCA models.
- In the BIOTRANSFORM project, you will contribute to the development of an LCA based evaluation framework of different scenarios of sustainability transition in 5 European territories and industrial sectors, from a linear fossil-based economy to a circular bio-based one.
- In the SIMBA project, you will contribute to the assessment of different scenarios of farm management and optimization, using a coupled Agent Based-Life Cycle Assessment model (developed with an in-house simulator and Brightway2).
- In the Terragreen project, you will contribute to the development of an LCA assessment and optimization module to be integrated in a vineyard management solution based on artificial intelligence decision support system and robotics. To this aim, LCA expertise in the agri-food sector and in coupling LCA with optimization algorithms is welcomed.
**MUST HAVE**
**REQUIREMENTS**
You hold a PhD in Life Cycle Assessment and Master’s degree in environmental science or engineering.You have previous LCA research experience, good knowledge of LCA software (SimaPro, GaBi or OpenLCA), proven organizational skills and interdisciplinary thinking, a problem-solving mind-set, and a strong team-working capability, but you are also able to work in autonomy and creatively.**NICE TO HAVE**
**REQUIREMENTS**
- You have experience in programming in Python and with Brightway2
- You also own expertise in uncertainty and sensitivity analyses
- The knowledge of German and/or French and/or Luxembourgish will be considered as an asset
