The project is nested within the European Union’s Horizon FPA “Quantum Internet Alliance - QIA”.
- The long-term ambition of QIA is to build a Quantum Internet. You will be embedded in our consortium comprising 40 world-leading academic and industrial partners. The PhD also comprises a short-term secondment at 3rd Institute of Physics of Stuttgart University.

**General context of the PhD thesis**:

- Quantum networks require connecting multiple “quantum nodes” via the fibre internet. Quantum nodes are small quantum computers, used for error correction and data storage. However, currently pursued platforms lack:

- An efficient connection to the fibre internet.
- Reproducibility.
- Potential to increase local qubit numbers for improved error correction.
- Within QIA, you continue our developments on a scalable quantum network architecture based on colour centres in the industrial semiconductor silicon carbide (SiC). Using SiC wafers allows to produce massive amounts of qubits. Individual qubits will use spin systems (electron and nuclear) to implement quantum computing. By integrating these qubits in nanophotonic waveguide structures, multiple qubits on a SiC chip can be connected through photonic interference.

**Your mission**:

- The overarching objective of this PhD thesis is to produce qubits based on SiC colour centres using industry compatible techniques. To accelerate this process development, you will initially set up a new high-throughput cryo-optic measurement station. This allows to characterise 100s to 1000s of colour centres simultaneously. This task comprises hardware and software developments.
- Using the measurement station, you will perform cleanroom process developments towards integrating colour centres into quantum-grade SiC nanophotonic structures. Depending on the results, the final goal of the PhD thesis is to implement:

- (a) Optical interference experiments between two separated colour centres to prepare quantum network tasks.
- (b) High-fidelity control of nuclear spin quantum computational registers in SiC nanostructures to prepare local error correction tasks.
- (c) Both (a) and (b).

Your work will be in close collaboration with our direct collaboration partners within QIA, TU Delft (Taminiau group) and University of Stuttgart (Wrachtrup group), as well as our long-term collaborators at Stanford University (Vuckovic group).

You hold a master degree in Physics, Quantum Technology, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or Photonics.
- Your MSc thesis must include in majority
- _experimental_ work in either Optics, (Quantum) Photonics, or Cleanroom Fabrication.
- Your technical skills comprise:

- Proficient level of English.
- Excellent written and oral communication, e.g., proven by publications, reports, or conference presentations.
- Willingness to take initiatives for result oriented work.
- Excitement to collaborate and efficiently communicate with the supervisor and with our international partners.
- Plus: Experience with quantum optics in cryogenic environments, and/or hardware control in python.
