The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.
The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

**How will you contribute?**:
As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today such as adaptation to climate change, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.
To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:
(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation;
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of:
Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources).
Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities.
You will join the Plant Molecular Farming research group which, among others, develops a range of biotechnologies for the sustainable production of innovative plant-sourced ingredients. The group activities are centred around phytofactory. LIST developed a bioprocess platform that allows using cultures of plant cells and chassis organisms as one of the most efficient solutions to produce complex and high added value compounds, which are difficult to either produce chemically or extract from available biomass. In this context, we are using plant cell suspension cultures to provide a safe means for the mass production of specialty molecules and proteins.
You will be expected to develop a strong, innovative research and innovation activity in plant cell culture and successfully define RDI projects in relation to these. Similarly, you will be expected to bring your expertise to reinforce the team in plant molecular farming.
More specifically, your objectives will span the industrial value chain starting from the upstream bioprocesses of cell factories and will require knowledge of bioprocesses' optimization to prepare the transfer to the scale-up phase (up to 300 L).
Expertise on bioprocess technologies for the production of specialty molecules and/or proteins from plant cell culture is required for this position. Ideally, you also have experience in scaling-up from lab to pilot scale, as well as a proven track record of working with industrial partners.
Furthermore, your main responsibilities will include to:
- Participate in R&D projects on plant bioprocesses
- Participate in the definition and management of new project activities in bioprocesses, including writing and submitting proposals for competitive funding and collaborative funding with industrial partners;
- Understand and formalise needs of private/public partners regarding scientific knowledge or technological developments;
- Contribute to the development of innovative approaches for using plant cells and plant products as sources of specialty molecules;
- Contribute to the creation of intellectual property rights (patents, licences, etc.)
- Collaborate with engineers, supervise post-doc researchers and PhD students involved in these projects;
- Actively collaborate with other researchers in order to promote interdisciplinary activities internally and externally ;
- Strengthen the Unit’s scientific and technological network in plant bioprocesses.
