The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. LIST, being an RTO, targets the development of technologies that have the potential to reach market readiness. For this reason, the quantum computing platform of choice is based on a semiconductor technology: Colour centres in silicon carbide.
- In-line with Luxembourg’s National Research Priorities, our long-term ambition is to develop a gate-based scalable quantum computing architecture, which can implement calculations that are relevant for the financial market and materials simulations.
- To support this commitment, we created two main pillars, “Quantum-Grade SiC Nano-Fabrication” and “Quantum Computing with SiC Colour Centres”. Here, we are seeking a researcher for quantum computing activities. Our quantum computing roadmap involves establishing small quantum computing registers based on individual colour centres and several nearby nuclear spins. Subsequently, several of these registers should be connected to each other on a monolithic SiC chip through photonic interference between colour centres (distributed quantum computing architecture).

**How will you contribute?**:
You will drive the Quantum Computing activities within the Quantum Materials group and implement experimental quantum computing based on individual colour centres that control small nuclear spin registers in silicon carbide. To this end, you will extend a room-temperature experimental setup with an arbitrary waveform generator for optimal spin control and later, you will support the set-up of a new low-temperature experiment to increase the number of controllable nuclear spins. Our initial goal targets control of 5-10 qubits using a single colour centre. Subsequently, you should undertake activities towards optical interference between colour centres on a silicon carbide nanophotonic chip, i.e., entangling electron spins via photonic interference. This work requires collaborative efforts together with the Quantum-Grade SiC Nano-Fabrication pillar. Further expansion of this scheme towards entangling distant nuclear spins will establish the foundation for our long-term goal: distributed quantum computing with nuclear spins on a monolithic silicon carbide chip.
You will report to the head of the Quantum Materials group (Dr. Florian Kaiser).
You will drive the experimental nuclear spin quantum computing activities with nuclear spin registers.
You will be an active part in our ongoing international collaboration networks (experiments, theory, materials).
You hold a PhD that includes experimental work in quantum technologies.
You have more than 2 years of experience in the field of experimental quantum technologies with multi-qubit systems, related to quantum computing and/or quantum communication.
Additionally you have:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills e.g., in several publications, reports, and (invited) conference presentations.
- Collaborative skills, initiative, result oriented, organization, and capacity to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
- A strong taste for experimental science. Team spirit is also a must.
- Experience with quantum optics, ideally including experience with optical cryostat systems.
- Hardware control via python/MATLAB is required.
- Ability to effectively and reliably coordinate with the supervisor and multiple collaborators.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise several students at the PhD level.
- Demonstrated participation in successful funding acquisition.
- Demonstrated ability of successful collaboration with external partners.
- Abilities in critical decision making.
Proficient level of English is required.French/German speaking is a plus.
