Description
**Internship contract - 6 months | Fulltime/40h | From 01.02.2024 (flexible) on | Belval**:

**Are you passionate about research? So are we Come and join us**:
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

**You‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department**:
The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem reilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

**How will you contribute?**:
Since several years, LIST works on methods for the management of contaminated land including a long-term collaboration with the Luxembourg Environmental Agency (AEV). In the context of polluted sites, the recently published European “Proposal for a Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience (COM(2023) 416 final1)”, in Article 15-Risk assessment and management of contaminated sites, states that “Member States shall lay down the specific methodology for determining the site-specific risks of contaminated sites”. So far, as no clear indication was provided at European level, each Member State eventually defined individually which remediation technologies should be promoted. In some Member State, dig and dump remains the main remediation technique. To better understand how a harmonized and sustainable management of contaminated sites in Europe could be promoted, a review of available soil remediation techniques (in-situ and ex-situ) is of great interest.

As part of the EPS group, the trainee will perform a benchmark analysis of remediation techniques for in
- and ex-situ soil remediation, including a review of the published screening matrices available at European level and in selected non-European countries (e.g. USA).

Besides the remediation techniques, the trainee will learn about the interrelated policy developments in the EU and will get a comprehensive overview of the policies related to contaminated soils. At the end of the internship, the intern will have a good understanding of the science and policy interface in the field of polluted sites.***

The outcome for this internship will be:

- A report that summarize each remediation technique from a technical/engineering point of view including advantages, disadvantages, and conditions for its utilization
- A description of case studies for each remediation technique (from literature)
- The description of the different remediation technology screening matrices available/published

The work can also be done as Master thesis.

**Education**
- Master student in Science or Engineering fields, ideally with links to environment/soil topics.

**Experience and skills**

**Language skills**
- Good level both written and spoken English

**Your LIST benefits**:
